Stuck in the Gap: Finding Your Way Forward When You’re Conflicted

What Happens When You're Stuck?

What happens when you’re aware of the gap, the ache, or the stuckness? When you are in a job or career that no longer feels right for you, what happens when you know you need to make a change but can’t see your options?

Sometimes it feels like there are no options but to stay. Parts of you think you should stay and they tell you that you can get through it, that you can handle it, that you can just keep managing.

You know you could force yourself to keep going. But your soul would be squeezed or drained from you. Your house and projects would be pushed down on the priority list. But you’d still get to travel, right? You’d still have health insurance. You’d still be paying into your retirement.

What is the path forward when parts of you want you to stay exactly where you are, but other parts are screaming for something different?

Honoring the Internal Conflict

The first step is to simply acknowledge those parts. The version of you that wants to stay and the version of you that wants to go are both operating from the same place: they want to protect you.

Recognizing this conflict is incredibly important. Neither side is wrong, and they’ve been doing the very best they can to look out for you. The reality is that you need to take some time to be still and truly hear what each part wants you to know.

It isn’t a quick, easy process. It’s not as simple as deciding your values or writing a pros-and-cons list. This is your life we’re talking about and you deserve to really know what you want for yourself. That requires you to pause and check in with your system.

The Shift into Relief

What we often forget when we are stuck in the paralysis of a decision is that clarity brings its own profound sense of relief.

When you finally stop fighting yourself and allow your authentic path to emerge, the heavy, constant friction in your nervous system begins to lift. The next steps don’t feel like forced labor or another obligation on your to-do list; they feel spacious. You start to move forward with a lightness and energy you haven’t felt in years, simply because your internal compass is finally aligned with your external actions. All the lights turn green.

The path forward doesn't mean everything becomes instantly perfect, but it means you are finally walking in your own truth. And there is no greater peace than that, it is actually really energizing. Things you were avoiding don’t need to be avoided anymore. You have energy for them.

The Answers Are Already Within You

Advice from other people, even those that know you well and care about you, isn’t necessarily going to offer you the path forward that will relieve that underlying ache. The path forward has to come from you.

But that’s also the most beautiful realization: it can come from you. You have the answers. You really do. You know what you want; it may just take some uncovering and internal stillness to allow that inner you to come through and be heard over the noise.

Believe me when I tell you I am familiar with this process. It brought me across the country in the pursuit of something truly fulfilling, and it brought me to the person I am today.
