The Energy Tip Nobody Talks About
A friend recently asked me a straightforward question: "What's your best tip for managing your energy?"
My answer wasn't about bio-hacks, time-blocking, color-coding calendars, or setting strict app limits. Instead, I told her about the simple practice of looking inward—checking in with yourself and listening to your heart before making a decision.
Afterward, I realized I hadn't given her a traditional productivity hack. But the more I thought about it, the more I stood by it: checking in with your internal compass is the single most effective energy management tool you have.
Validating the Weight of "Head-First" Living
When we feel overwhelmed, it is completely natural for a task, request, or decision to feel like a heavy burden. In lower, reactive states of energy, our default is to push through, rationalize, or view things as pure obligations.
When we make choices purely from our heads, we run through mental loops:
Should I say yes to this?
What will they think if I don't go?
Is this what a capable person ought to do?
Saying yes while feeling burdened creates an immediate energy drain. You spend double the vitality—first forcing yourself into alignment with something that doesn't fit, and then carrying out the task while dragging an internal anchor of resistance.
Shifting Perspective to See the Opportunity
Part of growth is learning how to gently shift our energy into a higher level of awareness. Sometimes, we simply need a perspective shift before we can see the true value, opportunity, or joy in something that initially felt heavy.
Shifting into higher energy isn't about ignoring your limits—it's about moving from reaction to conscious choice:
Choices Made from Fear or Obligation: These stem from wanting to escape discomfort, avoid disappointing others, or meet external standards. In the body, this feels tight, heavy, or frantic—like bracing for impact. It might be very subtle so be gentle with yourself.
Choices Made Consciously (Higher Alignment): These stem from honoring your genuine capacity and values. Sometimes a perspective shift helps us see an opportunity we couldn't see before; other times, it gives us the clarity to gracefully opt out. In the body, conscious choices feel quiet, steady, and expansive.
When you pause to check in, you create the space required to shift your energy, allowing you to see whether a situation offers a genuine opportunity or requires a healthy boundary.
A 10-Second Practice for Today
The next time a request, invitation, or decision lands on your plate today, pause for 10 seconds before responding:
Place a hand over your chest.
Exhale fully and let your shoulders drop.
Ask your heart: "Is there an opportunity here I’m not seeing, or do I genuinely need to opt out?"
If you try to check in with your body and you don't know what you're feeling, that's okay, too. Be gentle and breathe. Give yourself space for the message to become clearer—clarity doesn't have to be rushed.
Protecting your energy isn't about doing less—it's about elevating your perspective so where you direct your life force comes from a place of genuine truth.
Where are you feeling called to pause and check in today? Which decision-making mode have you noticed yourself in lately—fear-based overthinking or conscious alignment?
