What’s Driving Your Workday? A Guide to the 7 Energy Levels
Ever wonder why some workdays leave you completely drained, while on others you breeze through challenges with total focus?
It usually comes down to Core Energy—the internal lens through which you see and react to stress, workload, and workplace dynamics.
In the Core Energy Leadership™ framework, we look at human energy across 7 distinct levels. The first two levels are Catabolic (stress-based, defensive, and draining), while Levels 3 through 7 are Anabolic (growth-oriented, constructive, and energizing).
Here is how these 7 levels show up in your daily work life:
Level 1: Victim & Overwhelm
Core Emotion: Apathy, fear, or resignation.
Workplace Thought: "Why does this always happen to me? I have no control over this project."
The Impact: Drains your physical and mental stamina, making even minor tasks feel like heavy boulders.
Level 2: Anger & Conflict
Core Emotion: Resentment, frustration, or defensiveness.
Workplace Thought: "I have to do everything myself because no one else gets it right."
The Impact: Creates short bursts of intense action, but prolonged Level 2 energy causes severe burnout and fractures team relationships.
Level 3: Responsibility & Coping
Core Emotion: Forgiveness, rationalization, or moving on.
Workplace Thought: "It’s not ideal, but I’ll make the best of it and get the job done."
The Impact: The first step into constructive energy. You take responsibility, release resentment, and focus on practical solutions.
Level 4: Care & Concern
Core Emotion: Compassion, service, and empathy.
Workplace Thought: "How can I support my team and help them succeed today?"
The Impact: High collaboration and connection. (Just watch out for placing everyone else’s needs ahead of your own boundaries.)
Level 5: Opportunity & Reconciliation
Core Emotion: Peace, curiosity, and win-win thinking.
Workplace Thought: "There are no failures—only opportunities to learn and innovate."
The Impact: High engagement, strategic problem-solving, and seeing value in every setback or conflict.
Level 6: Synthesis & Flow
Core Emotion: Joy, intuition, and deep connection.
Workplace Thought: "We are all connected, creating something meaningful together."
The Impact: Creative flow, high intuition, and leading without needing to force or control outcomes.
Level 7: Absolute Passion & Presence
Core Emotion: Complete clarity and non-judgment.
Workplace Thought: "Pure creation."
The Impact: The ultimate state of objective observation and peak performance.
Awareness Is Where the Power Is
We don't live in just one energy level—we shift through them constantly based on stress, sleep, environment, and mindset.
The goal isn't to be at Level 7 all day. The goal is awareness: recognizing when stress drops you into Level 1 or 2, and giving yourself the tools to consciously choose a higher-energy response.
The Role of the Energy Leadership Index® (ELI)
Understanding these 7 levels theoretically is a great starting point, but true transformation happens when you know your exact baseline. That’s where the Energy Leadership Index® (ELI) assessment comes in.
Unlike personality tests that put you in a static box, the ELI is an attitudinal assessment that measures your default energy response under normal conditions versus when you're under stress. It provides an objective snapshot of your current tendencies, showing you precisely where your energy is draining you and where you are operating on autopilot.
